The Green Gardener - Sustainable Gardening in Your Own Backyard

The Green Gardener
Sustainable Gardening in Your Own Backyard

Author:  Josh Byrne

ISBN: 0670029416

Author Josh Byrne, presenter on the much respected ABC's Gardening Australia, is also an environmental scientist with  great vision and enthusiasm for creating "green" (as in eco-friendly) gardens, and what an important place they have in the future of our world.  This passion shines through in his book, as well as his important message.

Josh created his own garden along permaculture lines, as part of the show (also available on DVD), and inspired many other people to follow in his footsteps!

These few introductory words from garden guru Peter Cundall's Foreword shows how much value he places on this book.

" This is, without doubt the most unusual, informative and inspiring garden book I've read.  It is far more than a book about gardening- in essence it is a guide to survival for all of us.  It provides much knowledgeable advice about how to grow things, but also leads us into an entire philosophy about intelligent living. "

The topics covered are:

  • Save Energy-  winter & summer shade; choosing building materials; permaculture design.

  • Create Habitat-  making gardens wildlife friendly; native plants; ponds.

  • Compost and Recycle-  worms; making compost.

  • Go Organic-  healthy soil means healthy plants; weeds; pests and diseases.

  • Grow Your Own Food-  vegetables; herbs; fruit; chooks.

  • Save Water-  water-sensitive design; plant selection; mulching; drip irrigation; grey-water.

A handy planting & harvesting guide for various climates is included, along with some further reading and contacts suggestions.

An inspiring book for anyone who wants to create their own "green" garden.
