Heart Disease: Prevent It! Reverse It!
Along with many other diseases
Heart attacks... something that happens in old age... right? Well, in the past yes, but now heart disease is the leading cause of death in 'westernised' nations and climbing significantly in countries where it was almost unheard of decades ago, and it is happening to people at much younger ages. Even a significant number of people in their 30's and 40's now experience heart attacks or other problems caused by heart disease.
It is a sobering thought that almost every adult who has eaten a 'westernised diet' for much of their lives has some degree of the beginnings of heart disease, along with the diets' effect on their other arteries throughout the body and organs.
Autopsies done on young people, even in their late teens, have shown early stages of heart disease. So, in most cases, it is definitely a case of reversing it, as well as preventing further damage.
The following short video is a great introduction. Take note of the shadows in the pictures of the people eating, early on in the video... interesting representation.
Dr Caldwell Esselstyn's Diet for Heart Health & Healing
It is a frightening fact that for roughly 50% of heart attack victims their first heart attack will be their last heart attack... they will die of it. Combine that with those who will die during or as a result of heart surgery, or of another later heart event, or from other events related to other vessel blockages/damage such as strokes, along with those who die from medications and procedures related to their heart disease and it certainly makes fighting to reverse the damage you have done to your body an imperative, before you have to face these things.
Even if you don't die, having your ribs hacked open and all the other scary things that go along with major heart surgery, such as infections and possible brain damage from effects of the return from bypass, along with the healing time and efforts during recovery, make this something no-one should be willing to accept as somewhat inevitable as they age.
Dr Esselstyn, author of 'Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease', and researcher/practitioner in this area, says that heart disease is a toothless paper tiger that need never exist... and if it does exist, it need never progress.
Watch the video below to learn more about his ideas and research.
"Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease" by Caldwell Esselstyn Jr. MD
Isn't it well worth working towards being in the ever decreasing percentage that never have a heart attack or serious circulatory system related event? Or if you have had a heart attack, to make sure your first heart attack is your last... not because you die from it, but because you heal your body to an extent where you never have another one.
So, what is this amazing treatment that can potentially do so much? As well known 'whole food plant based' doctor, Dr John McDougall says... "It's the food!"
Change the way I eat? That's too extreme! But is it? As many of the plant based doctors point out... why do we not think sawing open chests and cutting veins out of legs to bypass destroyed arteries is not extreme (and potentially dying or having brain damage as a result), yet think eating in a different way is expecting too much? Personally, I'd much rather change the eating and lifestyle habits that are destroying my health than undergo any of these things, or the multitude of other health issues and procedures I may be condemning myself to if I don't change.
The good news is, what works for heart disease also works to prevent, reverse, or dramatically help manage many other lifestyle diseases, such as certain cancers, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, stroke, obesity, alzheimers, arthritis, depression and osteoporosis, to name a few. It can also give you much more energy and vibrancy, along with a more youthful, healthy appearance.
This video is a great compilation of various medical experts discussing these issues. Some very interesting stuff.
Whole Foods Plant Based Diet
Below is a much longer video of Dr Esselstyn, which also has his wife, Anne, talking about the practical applications of this way of eating.
Now, just to make it clear, there are no 100% guarantees that you will avoid diseases if you make these changes (although Dr Esselstyn seems pretty much convinced you can make yourself heart attack proof, so maybe for heart attacks it's pretty close) as there are often many other factors which affect outcomes, but it would seem very likely that you will be much less likely to suffer them and in a far better position to fight them, than if you continue to poison your body.
In the following video, Dr John McDougall talks about the 'food poisoning' most people inflict upon themselves and shows very clearly the results of this... and what we can easily do to change these outcomes.
Dr. McDougall - Is Your Food Poison?
The great news is that a whole food plant based diet not only has such great health benefits, but it can be extremely simple and inexpensive.
Starches such as potatoes, rice, oats and beans are cheap and filling. In most cases, animal foods such as meat are much more expensive than vegetables. You don't need to buy expensive or imported out of season veggies... buy what's cheap and in season, where you are, at the time.
You can try fancy recipes if you wish, or make it super simple with just a few ingredients thrown together.
Making these changes can be hard at first as you overcome habits and addictions and your taste buds adjust, but with time and adherece you can bring about greater improvements in your health and life that you would have thought possible. So why not give it a fair go... try it for a month or two and hopefully you too will see changes, which will lead to dramatic imptovements over time.
Your body wants to heal, so let it do what it innately knows how to do... if we don't bombard it with ongoing damage and give it what it needs to thrive. I believe that in a year or so you will look back and be so glad you made the change!
