Tesla Powerwall in Australia

What current fossil fuel energy production looks like.

Today's consumer and business energy requirements are primarily being met by the burning of fossil fuels (coal/gas) which is producing unprecedented levels of carbon which is continually ratcheting up to unbelievably dire levels.

Elon Musk believes we should do something about this, for us, and all of the creatures on Earth.

He goes on to tell us that very little land is actually required to produce all the solar (or renewable) energy that we need, and that also, very little space is required for all the batteries required. The roofs of existing houses would well and truly be enough.

As the sun does not shine at night the energy that you transfer during the day needs to be stored for your night usage.

Existing batteries are expensive, unreliable, poorly integrative, have poor lifetime use, have low efficiency, are not scalable and not to mention unattractive and often smell bad.

Elon says the missing piece is the battery pack system that makes all this large scale energy transition possible.

This is where the Tesla Powerwall fills the gap.

The Tesla Powerwall made by Tesla Energy

The Tesla Powerwall was first announced to the world on April 30, 2015 by Elon Musk and Tesla Energy.

The Tesla Powerwall is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery designed to store energy at a residential level for load shifting, backup power and self-consumption of solar power energy generation.

Powerwall consists of Tesla’s lithium-ion battery pack, liquid thermal control system and software that receives dispatch commands from a solar inverter.

The unit mounts seamlessly on a wall and is integrated with the local grid to harness excess power and give customers the flexibility to draw energy from their own reserve.

The Powerwall comes in a variety of colours and looks like a beautiful sculpture on your wall.

The fact that it's wall mounted is vital, meaning you can mount it in a garage, or outside your house and it takes up virtually no new room. You don't need a new battery room just to house your batteries.

The Powerwall also has all the integrated safety systems, the thermal controls, dc to dc converter and is designed to work extremely well with solar systems right out of the box.

If you're thinking of buying a battery what does the Powerwall provide you?

If there's a cut in the electricity provided to you by the grid then you have power accessible at all times, providing safety and security in an affordable solution. Load shifting – The Powerwall can save you considerable money by charging during low-rate periods when demand for electricity is lower and discharging during more expensive-rate periods, when electricity demand is higher (and the grid is more vulnerable).

Powerwall is available as a Weekly Cycle option with 10kWh or as a Daily Cycle option with 7kWh. Both systems can be connected with solar or grid and both can provide backup power.

Weekly Powerwall is optimised to provide backup when the grid goes down, providing power for your home when you need it most. When paired with solar power, Daily Powerwall can be used in daily cycling to extend the environmental and cost benefits of solar into the night, when sunlight is unavailable.

The Powerwalls are stackable. In fact, they can be paired up to a set of 9 Powerwalls inline if required.

Multiple Powerwalls can be installed together inline.

Elon also sees this a great solution for areas with poor or intermittent energy supply or expensive power, or even in regional locations where no grid power exists.

This is a battery solution that works out of the box in combination with your solar setup or other off-grid solutions.

This is the size specifications for the unit:

A Powerwall battery in Australia will cost you close to AUD$10,000 (if you already have a solar panel system installed on your home). If a new solar array installation is necessary at your home then you’ll be looking more at paying upwards of around AUD$18,000.

With the Powerwall being announced in late April 2015, sales of the battery system started in Dec 2015, in Australia, with a few select Tesla Energy Authorised Resellers.

So it's available now if there is an authorised reseller in your area.

If not, talk to your solar energy installer if you're planning on having a new system installed and see if they can organise supply of the Tesla Powerwall as part of the total system setup, as it may save you money, as opposed to buying them as separate purchases.
